Handling and Processing the Catch

When it's time to process the catch it is important to be well organised as you want to be able to collect the information quickly and safely as well as reduce the time it takes to handle each specimen.

  The processing of the catch can be summarised in the following simple steps:

  • Lift the bottom of the tunnel of the fyke net to prevent nekton escaping
  • Remove the stakes and gather up the wings of the fyke net
  • Lift the net up and keep the cod end in the water for as long as possible
  • Transfer the cod end to the container and keep it immersed in the water
  • Undo the net and place and quickly free any specimens caught in the net

The catch is now ready for processing, analysing and recording the data
