Measuring Water Quality

There are four water quality parameters which can provide an insight into the processes associated with saltmarsh habitat including:

  • Water temperature
  • Salinity
  • pH
  • Turbidity

Modern water monitoring equipment is capable of measuring the first three parameters from the same sample; salinity, water temperature and pH. It is important to make sure the equipment is calibrated before taking into the field. The methods for the calibration process vary depending on the type and model of equipment being used. You should refer to the manufacturer's instructions when calibrating this equipment.

Summary

Water Quality Instructions:

  • Ensure equipment is calibrated prior to sampling
  • Take readings just below the surface, but not touching the bottom
  • Take readings well away from where you may have disturbed the bottom and stirred up sediments
  • Take samples upstream of the flow
